GROWING UP PORTFOLIO ASSIGNMENT
 
     You are to read at least three books either from a given list or 
you are to ask me if the books you have chosen are acceptable.  The 
books must follow the above theme.
 
General Appearance:
-typed or hand-written neatly
-attractive and professional
-error-free
 
The portfolio submitted must include:
 
1.  Cover Page
     -original and creative
     -name and title  (as above)
     -class, date, teacher
 
2.  Table of Contents:

3.  Personal Responses
       Complete a personal response to each of the 3 novels you have 
read, in paragraph form.  Make sure that they have focused on a variety 
of issues (250 words each).
It should include responses to questions such as :
   - Who do the characters remind you of?    
   - Did you like or dislike the book?  Why?
   -  Are the situations similar to your own? Explain.
   -  What did you learn?
   -  What were your favorite parts?  Explain.    etc.
 
4.  Comparison
     Write a comparison of two of the novels that you have read.  
Discuss the characters similarities and differences.  Include the 
similarities and differences in plot development under theme "Growing 
Up".  Are the situtuations similar or believable?  Compare the conflicts 
involved in the novels.  Which of the books was better?  etc.  (300 
words)
 
5.  Literature Circles:
      Complete literature circles on the 3 novels through discussion and 
completion of the guide sheets. (Examples such as Discussion Director, 
Summarizer, Literary Luminary, etc)  These have been included by another
teacher in the Literature section.
 
6.  Creative Writing:
      Include 2 pieces of your own creative writing based on the novels.  
They may include, but are not restricted to:
  	-poetry  
	- short story   
	-journal entries by a character  
	- a new ending
  	- an interview   
	- newspaper article  
	- commercial  
	- character sketch

 
7.  Theme:
      What do you think is the central theme of each novel?  Consider 
the theme of "Growing Up".  In your discussion, explain how the theme 
was revealed throughout each novel.
    Include 5 paragraphs:  (1)  Introduction: What is growing up to you?
                           (2,3,4) Themes of the 3 novels
                           (5) Conclusion
 
8.  Visual:
    Your visual could be: 
			- an original drawing   
			- photos related to a novel
                  - a collage     
			- book banner   
			- a map of the setting   
			- game
 
9.  Interview:  (may or may not be on video)
     Do you get the chance to talk with your grandparents or someone 
else who has live a long time?  What do you like to talk about with 
them?  What do they like to talk about with you?  Interview an adult 
(preferably a grandparent).  
     The interview should be at least 3 pages--typed or handwritten.
You need a rough copy of the questions and answers given, so that you 
are able to write the interview in essay form.
     You should begin with an introduction (possibly what this person 
means to you).  At the end, you should have a conclusion on the most 
important points that impact your life.
      The alternate idea is to interview on tape/video instead of 
completing a written composition.  Again, tape yourself at the beginning 
for a introduction.  You may wish to have background music or photos 
included. 
Remember to conclude with a statement from yourself.  Submit the rough 
copy of the interview questions.
