I give this assignment in Grade Eleven after reading and discussing the first two acts of Macbeth. Prior to giving the assignment, we review the concept of comparison/contrast by comparing apples and oranges. I get the class to come up with as many bases of comparison as possible, such as shape, texture, skin, etc. This serves to remind people that in order to do a comparison, you must have some common elements as its basis. I have always found that effective comparison writing is difficult for students because they often get lost in the structure. Therefore, you will notice that I make this a very structured assignment, essentially giving them the subtopics for their essay, so that their only real task is to marshall the evidence. ********************************************* MACBETH ESSAY In the first two Acts of Macbeth, Lady Macbeth appears to be more ruthless than Macbeth. Using the AB/AB/AB method of comparison/contrast, show this is true in an essay of between 700 and 800 words. You may exceed this length without penalty. ORGANIZATION: Introduction Remember to move from general to specific. Begin by offering a general observation about goals and how people attain them. Then move on to specific reference to the play and the playwright, progressing to specific references to Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, thus establishing the framework for your essay. End the introduction with your thesis statement. Body Paragraph #1 Keeping in mind that each paragraph must relate to and support your thesis, compare pertinent aspects of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth's initial reactions to the thought of murdering Duncan. Body Paragraph #2 This paragraph should compare pertinent aspects of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth's behaviour and character prior to the murder of Duncan. Body Paragraph #3 This paragraph should compare pertinent aspects of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth's behaviour and character immediately after the murder. Conclusion First restate your thesis and then consider the significance of what you have discovered.
