The Animals vs. Napoleon The scenario: The outside world has gotten wind of the executions that have been taking place on Animal Farm. An investigator has been collecting evidence for some time now and has enough damaging information to bring Napoleon to court for his crimes. This is, of course, shocking news to most of the animals. Judge Jacobson will preside over the upcoming trial. Decide: Who will be your witnesses? The defense attorney? The prosecuting attorney? What physical evidence can you produce? Any potentially damaging testimonies? What kind of penalty are you trying for? (Capital punishment, life in prison?) Guidelines: 1. Each person in your group MUST have a significant role in the trial. 2. Each person in your group MUST turn in a written (yes, typed is fine) account of what he/she has contributed to this project during its preparation and presentation. 3. The courtroom scene MUST demonstrate a thorough understanding and analysis of the novel from which the characters are drawn. You may deviate slightly from the novel (for example, perhaps you locate a piece of evidence not mentioned in the book), as long as your changes are credible. 4. The trial MUST include blatant references to the novel—for example, have characters give direct quotes that they gave in the book, use descriptions of scenes in the book, etc. 5. Your presentation should be between 15-25 minutes long. You will lose points if it is under or over the prescribed time. 6. Creativity counts!! You have the liberty of putting words in the characters’ mouths, but again, everything should be credible (meaning the thought behind the words/actions is clearly found in the novel). 7. Please make your presentation interesting…it would be a bad thing if the judge fell asleep in the middle of the trial. Your group will be graded on the following criteria: Points: · 100% participation 5 · Realistic portrayal of characters 10 · Blatant references to the novel (quotations, descriptions, etc.) 10 · Appropriate length 10 · Creativity/interesting presentation 15 · Demonstrates understanding and analysis of the novel as a whole 20 You personally will be graded on the following criteria: · Your own role in the trial (including character portrayal) 10 · Your written account of contributions to the project 20 TOTAL POINTS: 100
