Materials: > Word Packets > Construction paper > Glue sticks > Markers This lesson can be annoying to set up for the teacher, but the students really seem to like it. First I make envelopes full of words, along the lines of magnetic poetry. These words should be all the parts of speech and each envelope should have the same words. Cutting them out is the annoying part. Then I break the class down into groups. Each group is to create a poem by gluing these words (not all the words have to be used) to the construction paper. They can add any words they need. When the poem is finished, they go back and use a legend/key to label the parts of speech. For example, underline the verbs, circle the nouns, put a box around the adjectives, etc. This takes time and preparation but it works very well.
