HARRY POTTER AND THE PHILOSOPHER'S STONE Consolidation Assignment, 1 st term Mr. Jursic HOGWARTS HIGHSCHOOL, CANADA Prof. Albus Dumbledore has approached me and asked that I divide you into groups of 4, for the purpose of studying Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Four is a magic number: there are four sides in a square and 4 houses at Hogwarts. Each of your group members is assigned a Hogwarts House to affiliate yourself with, and this is because you have been chosen to set up a magic school right here in Canada!!! Of course we are going to have to consider lots of things that make up the perfect school. Will it be hard? What will the entrance requirements be? Do you have the courage to design a school that you yourself might not be able to get into? Each member of your group will be sorted into a Hogwarts House by the Sorting Hat that Prof. Dumbledore loaned me. Time is running short. It has to be up and running by September, 2001. Prof. Dumbledore wants to see some proposals by the midwinter break. When we have completed our work, we will celebrate our success and congratulate each other for the fact that we are now Wizards who have set up something so important to our country's acceptance into Wizarding Culture. Work hard now, for later we will PARTY!!!!! FIRST, Let's develop a name for our school. Then we will be sorted by the Hat. Slogan, Seal, and School Song: Design a seal and construct an armorial bearing (coat of arms) that will serve as the official symbols for the new school. You should also adopt a rallying cry for our students, one that will appear in conjunction with the armorial bearings. See Mr.Jursic to have it translated into Latin or Olde English. Every school has a school song. Select music, compose your own, or have any music one wishes to sing to, and compose the lyrics for it. The song should be about how much we love our new school and why. Make it sappy if you can. Curriculum: What will be the entrance requirements? What courses are going to be offered at our new school? How are you going to find the appropriate teachers or professors? Consult the course offerings at Hogwarts as listed in HARRY POTTER AND THE PHILOSOPHER'S STONE for ideas but make sure that most are original. Remember that course titles are not enough, you must have course descriptions as well, and lists of books and related materials students need to bring to school. School Design and Physical Location: Where is the school going to be? What will it look like? How many students will attend? Where will they sleep? All these are important concerns for designing the physical habitat of our new school. Will there be a magic forest on the campus? How about a moat or a pond? What sorts of magical creatures might you find in the vicinity? Think about all this as you find the perfect place to hide your new school. Create a map of our new school, complete with scale, legend, compass, and name. Design and Management: What are the classrooms going to look like? Design the perfect classroom for each subject, remembering that since this is public education, each classroom is going to have to do double and triple duty. Also design the perfect dormitory room where students will sleep. Remember it can't be too lavish, parents must be able to afford to send their children there. Drawings and rationales are both aspects of this part of the assignment School Uniform: What will the teachers dress in? How about the students? Will it be cool or uncool? School Rules: Here at Ryerson we have a no-tolerance for violence policy. Also, no gum-chewing and no hats. Will you have these at your new school? How about other rules? Broomsticks in the halls or not? What about skateboards? Design a set of rules that respects students and teachers and at the same time promotes safety concerns and respect for others. Recreation and Entertainment: All work and no play makes our school a dull place. Decide what games or sports might be suitable for our new school’s terrain and climate (Unicorn Polo? Quidditch?) What diversions might we create to entertain ourselves? Occupations and Currency: Many new kinds of jobs will be necessary to our school. Remember we do things a little differently in the Wizarding World. Develop a system of currency and credit for North American needs so that people will be able to buy what they need. Please ensure for easy conversion into Dollars and Galleons, Sickles and Knuts. Work together, be creative, have fun and let your imaginations run wild!!! As in the real world, if any house works independently of the other houses, the school will not work. Go WILD!!!
