Level: 6-9 Five senses poem Materials: grapes, Ritz crackers, popcorn, carrots, and graham crackers (a wide assortment of food items), bowls, toothpicks. Divide the students into groups of four. One student from each group comes up to the front table and chooses one food item (enough for the entire group to sample). As a group, they must decide two to three adjectives for the smell, sound, feel, taste, and lastly the sight of that food. Next, they must create a five (or more) line poem describing the food without naming it. Once they have written a poem, they are able to get a new food item and start over (for as long as class allows). I've gotten great results and the kids have a BLAST writing the poetry. Food is the way to their poetic hearts :) I've enclosed a few examples as well: Grapes: A sweet sensation comes over me when I take a bite. The purple sight of it makes me want to eat it, When I slide it inot my mouth, the soft crunch sound is delicious. When the lump goes down my throat, the sweet sensation remains. They hang on vines careless and free As people pick them, they smell sweetly. As you bite the explode with wonderous juices Graham Cracker: Brown with small holes with a sugary sweet smell. Litsten for the crunchy, crispy munch as it is eaten. With a good honey cinnamon taste, it has rough edges like a desert. Carrot: The orange stick-like figure smells as if just arriving out of a garden. The sweet juicy crunch has a wet, soft feeling. The sweetness tastes good.
